This project was inspired by vocal works with orchestra (particularly oratorios) that often feature in Warsaw Autumn Festival programmes. With the 2011 edition of the Festival advocating social participation, we have suggested moving the orchestra out of the convenient space of the concert hall to the streets of Warsaw, and enriching the playing of professional musicians with the polyphony of the city\u2019s residents.<\/p>\n
Text, solo parts (which are very free in character), duos and ensembles were composed out of improvisations of Warsaw residents, selected during an open rehearsal, and performed by the same residents. An invitation to contribute to the project was sent through selected non-governmental organisations as well as newspapers to all those who wish to speak on important matters of Warsaw\u2019s and Poland\u2019s social politics. Consequently, the Oratorio is a sort of composed demonstration.<\/p>\n
The staging of the project was directed by Zorka Wollny (with the cooperation of Anna Szwajgier) while the music was composed by Artur Zagajewski. Text and music are freely intertwined, completing each other in emphasising the key moments, but at times also going their own way and losing themselves in the street noise.<\/p>\n
One important aspect of the project is the secularisation of the oratorio genre: independent of this or that institution, it can become a form of expression for pluralist society, a polyphony of opinions and postulates. Seeing the oratorio\u2019s dramatic potential during demonstration and rallies can help attracting the latter into the dominion of art. Another important aspect of the project is the cooperation of professional musicians with Warsaw citizens, and the sounding of a musical composition in the actual space of the city, with its noise, randomness and open form.<\/p>\n
